Common weight loss myths. We are gonna bust them today.

(00:05):

Welcome back to the thriving thyroid podcast, where we choose to become empowered patients and take our health into our own hands. Hi, I'm Shannon Hanson, a Christian entrepreneur, a mom of three. And after dealing with my own health mysteries, I made it my mission to learn everything I could about the thyroid. I soon became certified as a holistic wellness practitioner, a functional nutrition practitioner and a functional diagnostic practitioner. And so much more. After that, I founded the revolutionary thyroid program, the Hanon method as a health professional and a mom. I fully understand the importance of having a fun, simple, and sustainable plan for achieving a responsive thyroid. So I share actionable and practical strategies for developing a responsive thyroid so that the ambitious moms and women can gain freedom from fatigue and lose the thyroid weight once. And for all each week, I will be here for you. Along with my guest experts, we will be sharing simple and tangible tips that work for not only your thyroid, your hormones, your family in your mindset, so that you can get back to living the life that you envision for yourself. Welcome to the thriving thyroid podcast.

(01:26):

All right, you guys welcome back to the thriving thyroid podcast. We are back and we are gonna be talking weight loss myths. At the end of today, I'm gonna be sharing some personal thi not personal, personal, but anyways, you'll see at the end. So stay tuned, keep listening. I have some important information at the end of today's episode to share with you guys. All right. So let's dive in to weight, common weight loss myths, all right. Weight loss. There is not a shortage in weight loss advice. You go to the grocery store and there's magazines. You go talk to a friend and she has advice. You log into social media and they have advice. Everybody has advice and opinions on weight loss. And I forgot to say, who's right. And let's focus on what's right? Because what is getting results and what is, and, and that's, we are today in today's episode, <laugh> we are gonna be talking about who's right.

(02:37):

And what is right when it comes to weight loss. Okay. And I respect you too much to make empty promises and try to sell you something that doesn't work, especially when it comes to thyroid, because you guys, I feel like I literally had to unlearn all of the common weight loss tips and techniques when, when I dove into thyroid and when I dove into hormones, because it was no longer eat this, count, this macro weigh a measuring portion out this, and I'm gonna lose weight. No, it was not that way anymore. Or it would work for about a week or two, and then something would happen. And the underlying reason is inflammation. You guys, my clients, when they work with me, the first thing they notice is their inflammation is going down all the sudden, their face. Isn't puffy, all the sudden their joints, aren't hurting all this sudden.

(03:37):

They step on the scale and they're down seven pounds and it's not weight. You guys it's literally inflammation in the body. So anyways, here we go. There are too many weight loss myths out there, and I'm going to tackle the top ones that I have come across in my practice. So you guys hang on, ready? Myth. Number one, calories, cause weight gain and fewer calories are the path to weight loss. Dun, dun, dun, you guys. So calories are important for weight loss. So if, if you eat and AB absorb a ton more than you use and your bodys wisdom will take over and will store some of it for later. So yes, calorie do does matter. Calories do matter, but there are, it's not an end all be all. Okay. When it comes to weight loss, they are important, but there are symptoms. They are a symptom, not the cause.

(04:43):

So let's think about the reason people eat more calories, right? So let's focus on the cause too many PE people eat too many calories. Not because they're hungry, but because maybe they're feeling sad or lonely or bored, or maybe they don't feel the hunger and the fullness cues. So they're like, oh my gosh, it's 10:00 AM. And I haven't eaten anything. So I'm gonna go dive into some food. And because you don't know when you're full, then you're gonna just keep eating. Or maybe it's because you're tired or maybe because you're stressed or maybe it's even because you're happy. And you're celebrating all of these feelings interact with our gastrointestinal system, our nervous system and our hormones. So all of which influence calorie intake. And at the time of recording this, we've been talking a lot about parasites and stuff on social media. Even if you have a parasite, that parasite is a living organism, and guess what?

(05:48):

It also needs to be fed <laugh>. And so it's going to cause sugar food cravings, and it's gonna turn off the leptin and the grill in hormones, which are our hunger and fullness hormones, because it needs the calories to stay alive. And you are the host. And so think about it as a, like a party, right? You are the host at a party. You see that the, the salad or the finger food, all of those things are getting in and you have extra in the fridge. You're gonna pull it out and give it to your guests. They must be hungry. It's the same thing with our body. If we have a parasite inside of our body, that parasite is gonna be like, Hey, I'm hungry. Can you feed me? And you're gonna be like, yeah, I'm gonna feed you. <Laugh> right. Unknowingly. And some of you guys are totally cringing.

(06:43):

But that can also play a role in this. And we see that happening over and over and over again, when it comes to thyroid and hormones now, yes. Emotions also play a role in this. Yes. Stress also plays a role in this. Yes. Being tired. And, and one of the biggest changes that my clients see working with us is they actually start increasing their calorie intake around lunchtime. And then they have more sustainable energy in the afternoon. They're not having that afternoon crash because they provided their body with the fuel that it needed at lunch for later in the day. And then they're also not like driving home, like starving from work and going through the drive through <laugh> cuz that can also play a role in that as well. Okay. Myth number two, eat less and move more, eat less, move more.

(07:42):

That's the advice that we're getting. Well then we're all in tip top shape, right? Because people have been drooling over this myth for years. The premise that the premises of this is based on the above myth, that calories minus calories in burn. Oh my goodness. I cannot talk today. Calories in versus calories out equals your weight. So if you eat fewer calories and burn more calories because of human physiology, that's simple math, right? Even if people can happily and sustainably follow that advice, which many can't okay. So if this is, you don't think that you're a failure, it completely negates the other factors that contribute to weight problems. Things like the cause of overeating that we mentioned above, not men, not to mention genetics, not to mention health conditions like thyroid. And we are dealing with this in our exposure and our compound and to be compounded with you know, modern society and all of those things happening.

(09:03):

So it's not, again, it's not a matter of eat less and exercise more. And I I've told this story many times, but there was a time where I was having crazy hormonal issues. I hired a personal trainer, went to the gym five days a week, started watching what I was eating, following this math, right. Calories in versus calories out equals weight loss. You guys, I gained weight. I gained 10 pounds because my hormones were starting and my body went into a catabolic state, meaning it started breaking down muscle and tissue inside my body because it did not have the proper fuel. And it actually had the <laugh> the opposite issue for me. So that can, that can be playing a role in this for you calorie myth. Number three, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie is a calorie. And before I dive into this, I wanna share a quick story.

(10:09):

So I was on Instagram. I follow a male nutritionist on there and I believe not a believe. I agree with a lot of what he says on there. I really, really do, but he gave this example of a Lara bar, okay. He broke down the macros, broke down sugars, whatever. And then a candy bar and essentially the Lara bar compared to this candy bar had like 10 more calories in it. And you know, was basically telling people to go get the candy bar if you want the candy bar. And while I agree with that, the part that I don't agree with is the source. Sometimes I'm gonna tell my client, Hey, if you can be satisfied with a Lara bar, go get the Lara bar versus the candy bar. And the reason for that is the ingredients Lara bars while yes, they're high in sugar.

(11:11):

Yes. Are higher in carbohydrates. You know, yes. Calorie count is a little bit high, whatever the, the natural ingredients that you're getting in that Lara bar drastically, in my opinion, outweigh the, the candy bar. Because even though that Lara bar has high sugars, it still has fiber. So it's not going to affect your insulin and your glucose, the way that the candy bar would. Now that's not to say that I'm totally anti candy bars. <Laugh> I was on a coaching call this morning with our client and my daughter came in, they're getting ready to go to the movies. And she's like, mom, where's the candy. And so I'm explaining to her where the candy is and how to find it in the house. And, and so in that situation, yes you know, have candy from time to time. But the part that I don't want you guys to mistake is that not all calories are created equal. We still have to look at the source, right? Are, are these calories better calories? Are they supportive? All of those different things. Okay.

(12:33):

So let's dive into what I wrote. So science has confirmed several caloric compounds of food differ from others. So for example, the thermogenic food, which is, if you ever see this T E F right, that stands for the thermogenic effect of food is that some nutrients require calories to be metabolized. They can significantly significantly increase your metabolism just by eating them. Okay. So you eat this food, it increases your metabolic rate and helps you burn calories. So for example, when you metabolize protein, you burn more calories than when you're metabolizing carbohydrates, proteins, and carbohydrates both have four calories per gram, but the T E F right, the thermogenic effect of food of protein is 15 to 30% higher than, than a carbohydrate, which is five to 10%. Okay. So literally you're getting almost three times the thermogenic effect when you eat protein. And let me tell you right now, that is one of the things that I am struggling with is getting in enough protein in my diet.

(14:01):

Okay. Moving on. So here are some examples of calories not being a calorie, different from fats that are metabolized differently, right? So fats, we have medium chain triglycerides or medium chain fats like MCTs, MCT oil. And those have at the same four Cal, or excuse me, nine calories program, then other fats do, but they are metabolized by the liver before getting into the bloodstream. And therefore they aren't utilized or stored the same way as another fat. Okay. So we have to be mindful of where these calories are coming from and how they're playing a role in our body. And then the last myth that we are going to talk about is by this supplement, this tea, this pill, this weight loss meal replacement shake, or this magic potion to lose weight. There is literally no magic pill for weight loss. There is no magic supplement.

(15:20):

There is no magic tea. There is no magic food. There is no magic potion that will do the trick. And this is why I am incredibly passionate about what I do is I want to teach you how to eat food, how to structure your meals, how to make things simple and easy and fun and sustainable and, and incredible for you for the longevity. Because when you learn this, you are gonna teach your kids and you are going to model this behavior, which will hopefully begin to break this cycle of childhood obesity and childhood disease, because we are literally building strong bodies with the nutrients. And when we look at, so the question is always, where does health begin? And a lot of people say it begins in the womb. It begins two to three generations back. You guys, this is why we are seeing this epidemic rising and rising and rising is because we've gone through these cycles of thinking that marram is healthy and thinking that low fat is healthy and thinking all of these different myths along the way that has led up and added to it.

(16:46):

It's like the compound effect, right? The compounding effect of weight gain and, and issues. Okay. So there is a gold market out there <laugh> that says this product is going to help you. And they are full of garbage. You guys, please they're full of garbage. The only thing you stand in that you stand to lose in that situation is your money and possibly your hope. I cannot tell you how many clients that I have worked with over the years when I ask them, you know, what have you done to restore your thyroid? What have you done to lose weight? Oh, I've tried this shake. Oh, I've done this pill. Oh, I've tried this. No, you guys, please do not believe this myth, right? There is a reason. Most people who lose weight, can't keep it off. The real magic is ha that happens. The real magic happens when you adopt a sustainable, holistic, healthy approach to living in your life.

(17:53):

So what you need is long term lifestyle balancing over, over a product. Weight loss is hard. You guys, there are too many people out there telling you, take this thing, do this thing intermittent fast, cut calories, spend more time in the gym. And I'm here to tell you one of the biggest and the best things that I have seen for my clients. Hands down time, over time is balancing minerals, getting to the root cause, figuring out what is going on inside that body. And we do that mainly through testing, but this is <laugh>. This is what I, I warned you guys at the beginning. When I got sick in September last year, it really put a light on certain things in my business. And it caused me to go back to my client folders and my client notes and my client testing you guys.

(18:55):

I reviewed over 200 individuals tests journals notes, <laugh> sessions, all of these things, all of this documentation. It took me hours upon hours to, to do this. And I found these really big commonalities that don't have to be complicated. And so I have designed a new program called recapture your thyroid, and it is walking you through this process without the price tag of having to work with people, working with myself and my team to, to do the expensive testing to find out this information. And so I, I know I have mentioned that on a few previous episodes, but that is gonna be coming out in August. And I, you know, I've decided to move it back because guess what? We are all moms here. And I thought, you know what? I just need to get my kids back into school.

(20:01):

And if you wanna jump in now, the link will be in the show notes and you can definitely go ahead and get started. It, it will give you a leg up on all of that, but we, the pricing will be going up. There will be some incentives for you guys to join earlier rather than later. So to get the best deal, to get the best bang for your buck, definitely consider jumping in now. And you can schedule a call with me to discuss further if it's, if this is the right fit for you and we can go from there. So in conclusion today, you guys, I wanted to just recap the myths that we went over in today's episode. So number one, calories cause weight gain and fewer calories are put you on the path to weight loss. Number two, eat less, move more. Number three, calorie. A calorie is a calorie is a calorie and number four, buy this supplement, tea, food, magic potion, and lose weight. All you guys. I will see you on the next.
