Welcome back to the thriving thyroid podcast, where we choose to become empowered patients and take our health into our own hands. Hi, I'm Shannon Hanson, a Christian entrepreneur, a mom of three. And after dealing with my own health mysteries, I made it my mission to learn everything I could about the thyroid. I soon became certified as a holistic wellness practitioner, a functional nutrition practitioner and a functional diagnostic practitioner. And so much more. After that, I founded the revolutionary thyroid program, the hands, a method as a health professional, and a mom. I fully understand the importance of having a fun, simple, and sustainable plan for achieving a responsive thyroid. So I share actionable and practical strategies for developing a responsive thyroid so that the ambitious moms and women can gain freedom from fatigue and lose the thyroid weight once. And for all each week, I will be here for you along with my guest experts, we will be sharing simple and tangible tips that work for not only your thyroid, your hormones, your family, and your mindset, so that you can get back to living the life that you envision for yourself. Welcome to the thriving thyroid podcast.
(01:24):
All right, welcome you guys. I have Karen with me today and Karen is one of our clients that has been going through the Hansen method and working with us for the last six months, right? Ish?
(01:35):
Yeah, probably since January. Yeah,
(01:38):
Yeah, yeah. We're about six months. So anyways, Karen, why don't you spend just a minute to introduce yourself?
(01:47):
Okay. So I am I think probably not your, your typical client, that this was my concern going into the your program, because I felt like my symptoms that I was struggling with were a little unusual as post postmenopausal. And I had just a lot of reflux and heartburn kind of issues. And anyway, I'm, as far as introducing myself, I'm just a stay home mom that homeschooled and now my kids are often grown and, and so anyway, I when I heard and I don't even know Shannon, how I, how I heard about your program. I think Lord just dropped it in my lap because that first talk that I had with Joanna I was just describing to her the problems that I was having, because I would like in the middle of the night be get up and go run to the bathroom and throw up.
(02:59):
I mean, I, and I was not hearing any, like any of your other clients saying that. And I felt like, you know, that was pretty out there, but the doctors were just telling me you just need to be taking an acids. And I was also struggling with a lot of anxiety and depression and stuff. So throwing all the meds at me, you know, <laugh>, mm-hmm, <affirmative> the anti-depressants and the antacids and, and I don't even remember the names of the, the different things that they were wanting me to take, but I just was not comfortable with 'em, but I also am not comfortable with, you know, throwing up in the middle of the night, you know, and just all the stuff. I mean, it was like, I would have another time that I would have the reflux and heartburn problems would be if I had pressure on my belly, like, like I'd be I love gardening. And so I would be squatting down in the garden, you know, weeding and stuff, and it would just come over me this, you know, heartburn and would just be terrible. So, so anyway, that's where I was in January when I came to y'all and and I am so much better now. <Laugh> so very thankful for your program for
(04:21):
Your, yeah. Yeah. So were there any obstacles or challenges that you faced through your program? I can name a few, but would love to hear from you.
(04:33):
Hmm. Well you know, I I've been on the, the thyroid meds for, I really couldn't tell you how many years, maybe 15 or 20 years now. And so I wasn't sure how that, you know, if that was a part of it or, you know, my, my regular GP doctor was kind of saying that wasn't a part of it. It was, this was something different, so yeah, just sorting through yeah, I had no idea. And you guys ran me through like the liver detox and all this other stuff. I don't know what, what well, I
(05:16):
Was thinking about how we, we got started and you were having the GI issues and we gave you some supplements to try and it seemed to make things worse.
(05:30):
Yeah.
(05:30):
We kind of re re recalibrated and I think we did some other assessments and changed things up and it did get better, but, you know, I think,
(05:41):
Well, and, and that was, you know, I, I never really had a clear diagnosis, you know, I'd look at like gastritis and GERD and all of these IBS, all these labels that I never really, and then Hial hernia was the one that came out there at the end. Yeah. And so maybe it was one of those, but whatever, I, I never had a clear diagnosis, but I am just tons better. And I, I feel like in a lot of ways it's just kind of been the, the perfect storm for me in a, in a good way, because I don't know, I had you guys helping me with the whole supplements and detox and all of those things. And then I went to a chiropractor and he was telling me this thing that I kind of knew of that our world is just and the, the Lord just did this.
(06:48):
He, he like had three or four different people in my life showing me this same thing, because a good friend of mine, a godly woman that's kind of mentored me, but she was telling me the same thing. Same thing the chiropractor did was that we are bent inward on ourselves. And, and my friend Barb called it Naval gazing, where we just very consumed with ourselves and picking, picking ourselves apart, you know? Yes, the, the devices and on the computer and, and the chiropractor too was saying, you know, we are, we're just this shoulders, you know, hunched and slumped over, you know, as a culture we're doing that. And my friend, friend, Barb would say, you know, that's Naval gazing. And instead of doing this, we need to do this. We need to be up and focused up and focused out on each other instead of on me.
(07:49):
Me, me. Yeah. So anyway, I think that was a big part of it. And then, you know, I'll another the lady that I do Pilates with exercise Pilates class, and she's, I'm not sure what nationality is. She's very, very cute, but she, she, her favorite thing to say is shoulders down and chest proud, shoulders down and chest proud. And I came home and I wrote that down in my journal, shoulders down and chest proud <laugh> because I think that's really been kind of a, a mantra for me here lately is just that I need to have that posture of focused out and not, not focused in. So anyway, yeah, I think all of that made a big, a big difference coming alongside what you guys were doing with me. And yeah. So yeah,
(08:50):
I, we, I was just talking to my kids last night about cuz they're, since COVID, they've been at home, <laugh>, you know, yes. And we we've, we've kept them more in a bubble and they want to go back to school. And there's a really great school that is a Christian school here close, and it specializes in fine arts and all the things. And I was like, this is a great place for my kids. But I told, we were talking about bullies. We were talking about all of these things in the world. And I told them, I was like, it's important that you guys go out in the world and you become a light in the world because there are so many people that need you to, to share your light with them and, you know, including friends and, you know, standing up for others and all of these things. And, and to kind of go back to your point, health is central to that. If we are not feeling good and we can't get out of bed and we can't function and we're having, you know, GI issues or whatever it is, that's holding us back. It makes it that much more difficult for us to go out and to be that light in the world and to serve and not be so consumed with ourselves and our devices and, and whatever it is. Right.
(10:09):
Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Cause that, I, I just think, you know, I was stuck in this brain fog and, you know, anxiety and yeah, yeah. It just was not a good place to be. Yeah. So,
(10:25):
So share, oh, go ahead.
(10:28):
Well, I was gonna say so one, one thing I think y'all have really helped me see is that just helped me understand my body because I never thought about this. A adrenal situation that I was putting myself into. And now that I kind of understand what, what is happening, you know, like 10 o'clock and two o'clock every day where I'm just like feeling run down. I know what to do about that now. And a couple of weeks ago, so I had a, a daughter that just got married and she got back from our honeymoon and we were all had this one weekend where we were gonna get her moved and, oh, sorry,
(11:19):
You're good.
(11:21):
You're gonna get her moved and get her new husband moved into a new house. And so I knew it was gonna be, you know, just a physically draining day as one Saturday. And I, I knew that this was coming up well, Friday night, my husband, who is like the Energizer bunny and he's, you know, workaholic. And he will just jump in with both feet and do whatever he came down with COVID the night before. Oh. And so he was out. And so I was like, Ugh. So, you know, there's gonna be that much more work on me and I'm not gonna be at, at home I'm would, you know, it long story. But anyway, I was not in a situation where I could control my food and I was just like, Lord, what, how am I gonna handle this? You know? Yeah. Long day of, you know, being needing to be active. And that morning the, the whole group of people, you know, all their friends and we were meeting, they were going to a coffee shop to get coffee before they moved. And I'm like, that's not what I need. <Laugh> yeah.
(12:34):
Basically
(12:35):
Need that. And so I ordered an orange juice there and I really, I was not paying attention to what I ordered. And they gave me like this 20 ounce orange juice. And I was like, yes, that's exactly what I need. <Laugh>. And so I sat there and sipped on that orange juice all morning long, and I did just great. We ended up having a late lunch and I was just fine. And I was, you know, all thanks to you guys, because I did not recognize that my body was just in this state of extreme neediness <laugh> yes. Before. And so that was, you know, I was very thankful for being able to, to deal with that in a good way.
(13:19):
Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. So where would you say you're at right now? And I, I guess just a brief summary of the changes that you've experienced.
(13:34):
Yeah. So I, I feel like I'm just a hundred percent better with the whole reflex and GI issues. And I'm doing lots better with the brain fog and depression. I've started losing weight. I've lost like seven or eight pounds at this point, you know, without really trying too hard. So I'm very thankful for that. And, you know, I, I really appreciate Shannon too. The, the approach that you guys have of not pushing, like if you had told me going into this, that I was gonna have to give up gluten and all the things, I mean, you know, you had a very good, soft and gentle approach to that. <Laugh> and so I, I did give up all that stuff and I'm, I'm thankful that I did, but I mean, I was doing a lot of that before, but gluten I had not given up and dairy. I had not, you know, I was still hitting the dairy pretty hard. And so yeah, those dietary things I think have helped a lot to get me to a better place.
(14:55):
<Laugh> we, you know, Joanna and I both really enjoy letting people take the journey on their own. Right. And guiding them through that process. Because I know going gluten free and dairy free is very overwhelming. And I remember when I was told that I had to do that, I would have like almost a panic attack every time I had to go grocery shopping, because I had no clue what I was doing <laugh>, you know, and so that, and I, I think Joanna can resonate with some of that as well. And so I really like to do more of the crowding out versus cold Turkey <laugh> you know, so, right.
(15:42):
Right.
(15:43):
Any last words that you would like to share with anybody that's watch it hanging out with us.
(15:51):
Yeah, just to hang in there and stick with your, your methods, cuz I think there's a lot of, of wisdom and the approach you have, so,
(16:00):
Oh, thank you. Thank you so much. Great. All right. Thank you so much, Karen. And we will see you guys on the next
