Welcome back to the Thriving Thyroid Podcast, where we choose to become empowered patients and take our health into our own hands. Hi, I'm Shannon Hansen, a Christian entrepreneur, a mom of three. And after dealing with my own health mysteries, I made it my mission to learn everything I could about the thyroid. I soon became certified as a holistic wellness practitioner, a functional nutrition practitioner, and a functional diagnostic practitioner. And so much more After that, I founded the Revolutionary Thyroid Program, the Hanon Method. As a health professional and a mom, I fully understand the importance of having a fun, simple, and sustainable plan for achieving a responsive thyroid. So I share actionable and practical strategies for developing a responsive thyroid so that the ambitious moms and women can gain freedom from fatigue and lose the thyroid weight once and for all. Each week, I will be here for you, along with my guest experts. We will be sharing simple and tangible tips that work for not only your thyroid, your hormones, your family, and your mindset, so that you can get back to living the life that you envision for yourself. Welcome to the Thriving Thyroid Podcast Cast.

(01:23):

Hey, hey, hey, you guys. Welcome back to the Thriving Thyroid Podcast. I love these podcasts. I love coming in and talking to you guys. I love sharing with you guys. I love hopefully inspiring you guys and all of those wonderful things. And you know, what I love about life is that it's always evolving. It's always progressing, right? And I, I think, I don't know if I necessarily be believe that saying, where it's like, if you're not moving forward, you're moving backward, <laugh>, I don't believe that. I think maybe not necessarily moving back because you carry with you your experiences and your opportunities and your knowledge and everything, but you can stay stagnant. You can stay still, and in a place where you're not moving forward. I think that is more possible than moving backward. My own sense, <laugh>, my own, not even 2 cents, my own sense <laugh> is that's what makes, makes it work in my brain.

(02:33):

Anyways, so we have a lot of exciting and wonderful things coming up inside the handsome method, inside the business, inside the program. I have just, I've been really trying to pay attention to what people are saying, and not just what they're saying, but like trying to read between the lines and create and develop things that are going to be sustainable, that are gonna be simple, that are what you need in order to move forward. So if you're listening to the podcast, <laugh>, I have maybe been dropping a few hands on other social media platforms, and I'm gonna tell you guys what it is. I am developing a meal plan and recipe hub, specific tooth thyroid and hormone balancing. And I could not be more excited about this. It's gonna be super affordable when it comes out, and there's going to be a very limited offer where, I don't know, I, I won't, I haven't figured out all the details, so I won't say anything yet in case it changes, but there's gonna be a really good starter bonus, fast action kind of deal.

(04:03):

So make sure to follow me in Facebook and on Instagram thriving Thyroid to, or subscribe to the email to be one of the first to get notified what that introductory price and offer is. I think I'm going to have to cap some of it because it may or may not be very personalized. Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, okay. <Laugh> to the people who take fast action. All right, so the real topic for today is the hormone pyramid. And this is something that freaking drives me nuts in a very loving way towards other practitioners. I'm not saying all practitioners do this. I'm not saying all doctors do this, but a lot of people do this, or they might do this <laugh> or they forget, right? And I will be the first one to admit that I am guilty of sometimes forgetting the order and the process and stuff.

(05:15):

And then I always have to go back and be like, no, no, no, this is why we do things this way. So imagine a pyramid, and in that pyramid there are four different blocks, okay? I think most of us grew up with the pyramid, the food pyramid, okay? Imagine something kind of like that. At the very base level, we have hormones, leptin, and grelin. So those are your hunger and fullness hormones. Up from there is your insulin and cortisol levels up from there are your sex hormones. And then at the very top is your thyroid hormones. So if you were having thyroid hormones, guess what's happening? All of those other hormones underneath are crap. Excuse my language, <laugh>, okay, that wasn't really bad, but it, I know when you come to me at that elementary basic level, you're like, I have hypothyroidism. I have Hashimotos.

(06:19):

I know that all of those other hormones are outta balance and outta whack. So let's dive into what each of these hormones do and how they feed into the other hormones, okay? And hopefully we'll share a few stories and all the good things. Okay? So first and foremost, leptin and grelin. So leptin is that like hunger, <laugh> excuse me, I said that backwards, grelin is the hunger hormone. This is that growling sensation that is that empty turning sensation that is signaling to your brain, Hey, it's time to eat something. It's time to fuel that body. Well, what happens when we don't listen to that hunger signal? Your body's growling, growling, growling. It's saying, Hey, Shannon, it's time to eat. And you're like, no, go away. I have too much to do. I got kids to run around. I got this, that, and the other thing.

(07:21):

You know, okay, I'll just drink some coffee. Or, oh, I'll just have some water. Well, eventually, what your body's gonna do is gonna say, oh, just kidding. Maybe we don't know if we're really hungry. And so it starts to turn off that hormone. And then the same thing happens to our brain with leptin, where it tells us like, Hey, I've reached the full capacity. I'm no longer hungry. Stop feeding me. Well, if you're eating too fast and eating too much constantly, right? Let's say like, it takes about 20 minutes from your stomach to send that signal to your brain to say, I'm full. So if you're eating in five minutes and you're trying to scarf everything down, and then you're like, Ooh, 20 minutes later, you're like, oh, yeah, I, I ate too much. If your are constantly doing that, then once again, your body, your brain is gonna say, Hey, maybe we don't know when we're full, and it's gonna start down regulating that hormone as well. So we don't feel hungry, <laugh>, we don't feel full. We just look at the clock and we're like, oh, yeah, I haven't eaten all day and it's three o'clock. Okay, let me eat something. Or we get to that, you know, 12 o'clock, one o'clock, and we're like, oh my gosh, I'm hungry. Your stomach is like so hungry that you, and you didn't prepare. So then you're just grabbing anything and everything in sight trying to eat that thing.

(08:59):

This is your body <laugh> trying to tell you, feed me, fuel me, right? Your body is like a premium car, right? It's like top of the line, rolls Royce, Lamborghini, like those cars need premium fuel. If you're giving that car like regular, I don't know, whatever, regular gas, you'll notice that that engine, that car is not performing at its premium. That's the same thing with us. If we are not feeding our body premium foods, whole foods, fruits, veggies, meats, and we're eating more regular food, right? Standard American diet, then what happens is our body starts to down regulate our engine stops running as smoothly, and we notice less energy. We notice more brain fog, we notice more puffiness. We notice those things, and you may not have the words because a lot of my clients will come in and say, I don't, I didn't realize how when I drank a soda, I was actually more tired that day.

(10:17):

Or when I drank a soda, I had more sugar cravings. Ta da da da <laugh>, right? Because this is your norm. This is your norm. Whatever that looks like for you, it is your norm. Okay, so let's move on to insulin and cortisol. Ooh, which one do we wanna start with? Let's start with insulin, because we started talking about blood sugar. So when we are not eating, we're skipping meals, we're not eating, we're eating fast, easy, convenient foods. We're eating standard American diet that's gonna mess up our blood sugar levels. We're gonna be craving more coffee, we're gonna be craving more soda or caffeine or crackers or bread or whatever, because our body still needs fuel. What is the fastest way to get fuel into the body? Carbohydrates, they're the fastest thing to be broken down and to give your body fuel because carbohydrates begin breaking down in your mouth, in your mouth, and then in your stomachs, they're like, they're broken down within like one to two hours, sometimes three, depending on what, what carbohydrate it is.

(11:34):

And so right away, right away things are, your blood sugar is gonna go out of balance. You're gonna start noticing more cravings and sweets. I have a really a good friend that tells me she drinks a coke every morning for breakfast, and you know, she's on her own health journey or whatever. And it's so interesting to me how she doesn't necessar like, she's like, it just tastes good. It's just what I've done. It's just, it makes me feel good first thing in the morning. Well, later on in that day, she needs more and more caffeine and more and more of those like energy spikes to keep up with what she did first thing in the morning. So balancing blood sugar is critical <laugh>, it is a critical component to balancing your hormones overall. Kate, cortisol, let's talk cortisol because that is a huge buzzword right now.

(12:36):

Everybody's like, my cortisol is high, my stress levels are high, that's why I have the belly fat and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I wanna say yes, but what's actually happening is the D H E A to cortisol ratio is outta balance. You guys, D H E A is very drastically underrated for a lot of reasons <laugh>, but when D H E A is low, that is really where we start putting on the belly fat. D H E A is like a, a growth hormone, a growth steroid for us, and not in the way of like making you bigger, but it helps with like neuroplasticity and hormone balancing. And it is another hormone that is helping to maintain homeostasis inside the body. So in my opinion, and there's research to back this up, when that ratio of D H E A and cortisol is off, that is when we actually start having more anxiety, more depression, more weight gain, more chronic stress, which leads us to all of these other issues that we've already mentioned, right?

(13:53):

The brain fog, the weight, the blood sugar dysregulation, the ignoring the hunger and fullness cues, okay? And so, yes, cortisol is important, but it's also an anti-inflammatory cortisol. So let me back up and I wanna share a quick story with you guys. So several years ago I was having a lot of fibromyalgia symptoms. I was in a lot of pain. A lot of times I didn't understand what was happening. It was like this deep muscle pain where I'd be standing at the kitchen sink doing dishes, and I'm leaning on the kitchen sink and I'm crying because my body hurts so bad. And my kids would be like, mommy, why are you crying? And I'm like, oh, nothing. I'm fine. Well, I didn't have, I mean, I, I did know that I was in pain, but I didn't understand why I was experiencing that.

(14:49):

And so when I went to finally go work with a doctor who knew what he was talking about, <laugh>, and he is the person that also mentored me for a while he shared with me that cortisol, like I was basically not producing cortisol. I had hit what they call like double burnout. And so my body was overproducing cortisol for so long, and then, then my body's like, I can't produce any cortisol. So I was underperforming, and that was leading me to the thyroid issues that I was, or not even the thyroid issues, but the muscle pain that I was having. And so one of the recommendations he had for me was to take all the stress off of my body. So that meant no more exercising that meant easy to digest foods for 30 days to help regulate my hormones. And it was life changing.

(15:46):

Let me tell you, in those 30 days, it changed my whole body <laugh>. And my journey wasn't done at that point, but I started to feel better. I started to recognize who I was and how I felt and what I needed to do in order to climb out of that deep, dark, deep, dark, yucky hole that I was in, and really start to pay attention to what my body needed and how to support my body with good, wholesome, nourishing foods. And that's really where the handsome method and things came into play is because I was finally like, oh my gosh, people need to know what I know, what I was taught, what I experienced, how, how everything comes together. And so anyways, okay, so we talked about all of those before. Okay, so now we're onto sex hormones. So sex hormones include estrogen, pester, and testosterone.

(16:43):

Well, those hormones, those three hormones, a lot of the base hormones for those are D H E A, cortisol and insulin. If those things are outta balance within with not having the right ratio, then we have issues <laugh>, right? Then we have heavy periods, we have missed periods, we have breast tenderness, we have all skipped periods, right? You could be having like those amenorrhea type symptoms, which in all honesty, when it comes to thyroid, that's not something that I typically see is that what I typically see is more estrogen dominant. So estrogen is high, progesterone is low. So what people experience is like anemia, arthritis celiac disease, maybe hypertension, hyperactivity, so that like a D D A D H D where you're not able to just focus and get stuff done. We also see those emotional disturbances in terms of like feeling snappy and irritable.

(17:54):

We also see adrenal dysfunction in poor gut health, depression, fibroids, endometriosis, fatigue, PMs, infertility, insomnia, hair loss, those frontal headaches, all of those wonderful things that is a little more common with what I do with thyroid, not so much the the skipped periods. I do see irregular periods. A lot of my women have had ablations. This was really popular several years ago. I know a lot of medical doctors are now kind of shying away from ablations because now they're learning <laugh> that there are side effects to doing those. And so some people aren't performing them and they're not doing them the way that they, they used to. They're now wanting to just take, take the whole <laugh> do a hysterectomy, a partial hysterectomy, or a full hysterectomy. So anyways, that's, that's typically what we see, but again, those sex hormones are building on the other hormones, and then we finally get to thyroid hormones.

(19:04):

So by the time women reach me, they're in a full-blown thyroid chaos cascade effect where you're coming in and you're saying, Hey, I have these issues and that issue and da, da, da, da. But what's actually happening are these hidden stressors and hidden imbalances that if are left to be unresolved, they cascade into other areas. And that leads us to this c thyroid chaos and causing more serious dysfunction, leading to disease, leading to symptoms, leading to what we call cellular death in terms of like your body, your thyroid is your body's engine, and it's gonna start slowing down and down, regulating, leaving you with this worsening effects, worsening symptoms, worsening life <laugh> for a lack of better, better term right now, because we're forgetting all of these other steps, we're forgetting all of these other hormones, and your doctor is saying, Hey, Tammy, here's a pill.

(20:20):

Hey, Jessica, here's some thyroid medication. Come back in six months. Well, what about all of these other things? So yeah, you, your thyroid labs may be normal, and they may be fine, and they may be good and whatever, but we're not addressing the foundational things that are happening inside the body that lead to true and everlasting health and wellness. All right, you guys, I'll see you on the next. Before you go, I want to give you a special invite to an upcoming, an upcoming masterclass on three overlooked hormonal shifts that are helping you to heal your thyroid function. This class is incredible, you guys. We are diving in depth on so many different things. First and foremost, we're gonna be talking about healthy food that is blocking thyroid function. We're gonna learn how to combine foods to help maximize your nutritional intake, and also going to be teaching you about metabolic typing and how to eat according to your metabolic type so that you don't have to quote unquote diet again.

(21:33):

Your body will easily be able to get the nutrient needs, reduce inflammation and slough off the excess weight. We're gonna talk about how the current medical model is failing you and keeping you stuck when it comes to your thyroid. We're gonna be talking about thyroid blockers and how they're coming into your life and keeping your medication from not working optimally, keeping you tired, fatigued, puffy, inflamed with brain fog. We're gonna also dive into medication and supplements that is blocking thyroid function and one of my most favorite topics, how your body is speaking to you and what you need to know in order to know how to listen to it. Last but not least, we're gonna teach you and walk you through the steps to help you understand symptom mapping and how you can take your health into your own hands. Head over to the show notes, register for upcoming class, and get all of the details on the dates and times. I'll see you on the next
